Self-Care Tips for the Hectic Holidays

With Thanksgiving behind us, the holiday season is in full swing and that means that while it is a time full of cheer, it is also a very hectic time as well. The most wonderful time of the year is also the busiest and the most stressful. It’s easy to get caught up in all of the things that need to be done — from buying gifts to traveling to the various events and appointments that go with the season and because it’s so busy, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed.

That’s right, while we are busy making spirits bright for others, we can end up being grinches to ourselves and that’s why self-care during the holiday season is so important. The great thing about self-care is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or even time consuming to give yourself the gift of relaxation and attention this holiday season. Here are just a few simple self-care ideas to get yourself through the season.

First, hydrate. It sounds cliche, but when you’re busy it’s so easy to neglect to drink enough water and not drinking enough water leads to a whole host of issues. Did you know that dehydration can cause headaches? No one has time for that! Additionally, the weather this time of year is colder and that also means that the air is dryer. Making sure you drink enough water also helps keep your skin hydrated as well — which goes a long way to making you look your best. Look good, feel good. It’s a win-win.

Second, streamline what you can. Stressed about gifts? Maybe you don’t have to buy specific items for everyone on your list and you can do gift cards instead — and some places even let you do e-gift cards to make things even easier. The same is true for greeting cards as well. You can send out festive emails with just a few clicks and save yourself a lot of time while still delivering a personal touch.

Third, you can also save yourself some time by scheduling postal pickups right from your house. Going to the post office this time of year can be busy and stressful, but you can cut that stress and time form your packed schedule by setting up pickup. Time saving conveniences are definitely self-care!

Fourth, take a little time for yourself even if it’s just a couple of minutes between other tasks. This one might be my favorite sort of self-care this time of year and it can be as simple as getting a Starbucks to enjoy while driving to run errands. No matter what you have going on there is always time spent between tasks where you are doing something, but you can also use it to take care of yourself. Get a drink you enjoy, listen to a podcast, sing along to your favorite songs — whatever makes you smile and gives you just a moment of respite. You may only have a few minutes between point a and point b, but it’s a perfect time to refresh and recharge.

How do you take time for yourself during the holidays? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Limited Availability for Magical Santa Sessions

‘Tis the season for Magical Santa Sessions

These magical sessions with Santa are the epitome of childhood dreams. Each year Santa stops by my studio for a few hours offering individual time with each family and bringing each child a special gift chosen just for them. Whether your child needs a moment to get comfortable or wants to share their dreams with Santa, they will get that time and I will capture all of it as a keepsake.

Now, you may notice that Santa seems a little different this year. That’s because, after years of service at the North Pole, has retired and passed on the responsibility of bringing joy and delight to children for the season to a new Santa who is just as jolly. That’s the magic of the holiday: there will always be Santa.

The Magic of Christmas Returns to the Studio

It's hard to believe, but in just a few short days we'll be closing the door on October and welcoming in November and with it, the holiday season. For many, Holiday 2021 is the first holiday season that will feel somewhat "normal" after more than a year of challenges and uncertainty due to the pandemic - and that makes it all the more exciting and magical. This year, I am excited to announce that we are teaming up with Santa once again to return the joy and wonder of the season to the studio.

These sessions are some of my favorite and I truly look forward to them all year long. This year, I'm overjoyed to be doing them again and getting to bring the warmth, joy, and enchantment of Christmas into the studio and your precious photos. Of course, that goes far beyond just the holiday scenes and smiles. I go all out, with the smells and sounds of Christmas as well to create a jolly, immersive experience that really sets the tone for the whole holiday season. And as for the photos themselves? There's nothing more enjoyable than those bright smiles and the pure joy and excitement of kids getting to meet Santa. We can all use a little bit of that in our lives.

On Sunday, November 14th, Santa Claus will be visiting the studio and I am offering magical Santa Mini Sessions. These sessions are 30 minutes in length and include 15 digital images as well as a handpicked gift for the child. There will be two beautiful Christmas scenes for the photos and parents can even jump into a couple of the photos with the kids - because even parents are kids at heart. Sessions are $300 for one child. Additional children are $25 each.

With these sessions coming up fast, here are a few things to keep in mind. In years past, these sessions have sold out very quickly, so if you are interested, you'll want to book now to ensure your time with Santa. Additionally, given the timing of the session, the photos will have a quick turnaround time. I know that many families like to use these photos for holiday cards or gifts, so all photos from these sessions on November 14th will be sent out within the week to allow families to enjoy them as we get into the heart of the Christmas season.

I am so looking forward to sharing the magic of the season with you and your family!

Tips For Beautiful Family Photos

Family photos are some of my favorite types of photos to capture. Not only do I get to see different families with their different dynamics interact and express their bond, but I also get to create photographs that capture memories and moments that will last for lifetimes. I get to, in a sense, play historian for their stories, preserving moments in time for generations to come. It's a wonderful experience, and while each family and each session is unique, there are a few tips that I have found to be universally helpful for nearly every family shoot (or any session). Here are some of my best tips for preparing for your photo session to make sure it goes smoothly and you have the best experience.

What to Wear

If you're looking for fashion tips, you won't find them here. I love seeing all of the personal styles people bring to their sessions. But when it comes to those styles, there are some best practices.

-Don't wear your photo outfit(s) to the session if it can be avoided. In most cases, even outdoor sessions will have a restroom or changing room nearby so that you can put on what you want to wear in your photos right before we begin. This tip is especially important for young children, who might ruin their outfits on the way to a session. As a mom myself, I know just how easily a kid can go from perfectly dressed to a perfect mess. Waiting to dress at the session keeps everyone looking fresh.

-Try on your photo outfits before the session. A lot of my clients like to get new outfits for their photo sessions and that's great. However, every so often, someone will order or purchase something that doesn't fit quite the way they expected (or a little one will have an unexpected growth spurt). Checking your outfits a few days before the session will help alleviate wardrobe stress on your day off.

-Bring a backup outfit. Especially for those with very young children, having a spare outfit is important. You never know when someone will get something on their clothes and while careful editing can help with small issues, there are some things that even that can't hide. It's always good to have a backup.

Being Prepared

Outside of clothes, the biggest thing I like to remind clients is that being prepared for the session is important and by that, I mean you want to do everything you can to be in a good mood for your photos. Here are some of my best tips.

-Don't get photos taken while hungry. You know those Snickers commercials that say "you're not you when you're hungry"? It's true! Having a snack before your photo session can keep the hangries away and this is especially true for children. And for very young children, if the photo session is near mealtime, you might want to go ahead and feed them before the session. It will make it much easier for you as well as me as the photographer to get those beautiful photos. As a bonus tip, having some sort of simple, non-messy snacks on hand just in case is never a bad idea.

-Naps are magic. This one is mostly for kids, but even adults love naps, too. Try to ensure that your little ones have had their nap before your photo session. Your child will be much happier and the photos will show it.

Other Best Practices

Here are just a few of my other basic tips for a successful photo session.

-Be on time. As a photographer who shoots with natural light, the timing of my sessions is crucial to getting the best images and that makes being on time very important. Being on time for your session - or even 10 minutes early if you have to dress on-site - will ensure you get the best photos.

-Communicate with your photographer. Have someone in your party who doesn't like their photo taken? Have a child scared of cameras? Let me know in advance. I can help come up with strategies to make it easier for everyone.

How do you prepare for family photos? I'd love to hear how your family gets ready to capture memories. Leave me a comment or, if you're interested in booking your own family session, fill out my contact form here.
